Donald Trump said Monday that he had directed the Pentagon to establish a Space Force, describing it as a sixth branch of the U.S. military. It would be the first time the Pentagon has stood up a new service since the Air Force received its independence after World War II.

Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson and National Science Foundation (NSF) Director France Córdova signed a Letter of Intent May 9, 2018, creating a new partnership for collaboration on scientific and engineering research to bolster national security. The Letter of Intent initiates a strategic partnership focused on research in four areas of common interest: space operations and geosciences, advanced material sciences, information and data sciences, and workforce and processes.

Brain power is key to testing the most advanced aircraft and aircraft systems in the world. Where better to find that brain power than within the halls of the finest universities in the world. Each year, the 412th Test Engineering Group sends recruitment teams as far away as Georgia in search of young talent to pave the way for the future of flight test at Edwards AFB. This effort by the group seems to be paying off with 63 new engineers hired in the past two years.

The USAF was formed Sept. 18,1947, to secure the skies. Our airpower started in 1907 when the Army created the Aeronautical Division Signal Corps after witnessing the potential of aircraft developed by the Wright brothers. In World War I the Air Corps was made up of 12 officers, 54 enlisted men and just six aircraft.
