Salt Lake City-based sPower suffered "denial of service" attacks on March 5 that left grid operators temporarily blinded to generation sites totaling 500 megawatts... The cybersecurity incident is the first confirmed to have caused "interruptions of electrical system operations," based on DOE records. Experts say the hackers behind the attack may not have known they were affecting the power grid
According to the AWEA’s “U.S. Wind Industry Third Quarter 2019 Market Report”, 1,927 megawatts - a little under 2 GW - of wind power capacity was commissioned in the third quarter of 2019, the highest third quarter on record for installations. These installations pushed overall capacity above the landmark figure of 100 GW, the AWEA’s report said.
When it comes to wind energy, the United States is sitting on a gold mine, so to speak. "To me, this is like when oil was first discovered in the U.S.," says Jerome Hajjar, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Northeastern University. It's a moment of untapped potential that, if harnessed properly, could transform the way the U.S. uses energy, he says.
DOE will give up to USD 7 million for projects conducting testing in support of innovative offshore wind research and development using national-level testing facilities, including a subtopic for projects that upgrade existing facilities to enable them to perform specific research activities.
Want to be in the second fastest-growing job field in America? Then you’re going to be a wind turbine technician! In celebration of American Wind Week, here’s a look at resources the Energy Department offers to teach kids, parents, teachers, and workers about wind energy and wind careers.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, an original operator of the dam when it was erected in the 1930s, wants to equip it with a $3 billion pipeline and a pump station powered by solar and wind energy. The pump station, downstream, would help regulate the water flow through the dam’s generators, sending water back to the top to help manage electricity at times of peak demand.
A District judge ruled Friday Chinese turbine manufacturer Sinovel Wind Group Co. must pay $59 million in a plot to steal trade secrets from a U.S. rival. In January, a federal court in Wisconsin convicted Sinovel of stealing trade secrets from AMSC and nearly putting it out of business.
With the continued help of the production tax credit, developers in the US installed 7,017 MW of new wind capacity in 2017, bringing the country's total to 89,077 MW, the American Wind Energy Association reported Tuesday. "New wind power capacity in 2017 represented $11 billion in private investment," said Amy Farrell, AWEA's senior vice president of government and public affairs.
In 2009 the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) and the Breakthrough Institute collaborated to complete the report, Rising Tigers, Sleeping Giant, which benchmarked the clean energy competitiveness of China, Japan, South Korea, and the United States in order to emphasize the importance of innovation as a driver of economic competitiveness.
